The Best Places to Enjoy Autumn in The Hague

When autumn arrives in The Hague, the city takes on a completely different atmosphere. The trees turn golden, the parks get quieter, and there’s that familiar crunch of leaves underfoot. Whether you’re in the city centre or just outside it, there are plenty of places to soak up the season. Here are a few favourites.

Lange Voorhout is one of those spots that seems made for autumn. The rows of tall trees turn bright yellow, and it feels calm and cosy. It’s perfect for a weekend walk, grab a coffee from a nearby café and take your time admiring the historic buildings and changing leaves.

The surrounding old city centre, especially around Denneweg and Noordeinde, looks extra charming this time of year. The mix of warm lights from shop windows and autumn colours outside makes it a great place to wander, shop, or stop for lunch.

Clingendael is a classic autumn favourite in The Hague. The big open lawns, the old trees, and the quiet paths make it ideal for a long walk or a quick escape from the city. The park turns into a mix of orange, red, and gold by mid-October.

If you’re lucky, you can visit the Japanese Garden, which only opens for a short time in spring and autumn. It’s one of the most peaceful places in the city, with bright Japanese maples and reflections in the water that are especially beautiful in autumn light.

Haagse Bos is the city’s own forest, a green stretch right in the middle of The Hague, and one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands. It’s a place where city life fades as soon as you step under the trees. The wide paths are perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling, and there are plenty of smaller trails that lead deeper into the woods if you want some quiet time.

At the heart of the forest stands Huis ten Bosch Palace, the royal residence of the Dutch King and Queen. The palace adds a special touch of history and grandeur to this already unique area. You can catch a glimpse of it from certain walking routes, framed by autumn colours.

Just next to Central Station, Koekamp is small but full of charm. You can often see deer grazing near the trees, and it’s an easy place to stop by before or after work. On foggy mornings, it’s especially pretty, quiet, green, and surprisingly peaceful considering you’re right next to the busy city.

You don’t have to go far to enjoy autumn in The Hague. Whether it’s a walk along Lange Voorhout, a few quiet moments in Clingendael, or a quick detour through Koekamp, these spots show just how much nature is part of city life here. So grab your coat, take your camera, and enjoy The Hague at its most colourful.
